About Us
Hello, my name is Terri Winkelman, the Owner of Gertie’s Soaps and Sundries. I would like to share with you a little bit of our story.

I have always had a love for soaps and would always buy fancy soaps while out shopping. However, I never really planned on trying to make soap. A few years ago though, I developed a rash on my neck that after several months, and more than a few doctor visits, would just not go away! Thinking that it had to be an allergic reaction to something, I began to read labels on the products that I was using and I was absolutely dismayed at the ingredients that were in these so called “high-quality” soaps and lotions! I couldn’t even pronounce some of them!

I decided to switch over to all-natural skin care products, and tried some craft soap that I purchased at our local Farmer’s Market; it was a beautiful soap, with pretty colors and a great scent, but I was still uneasy about the ingredients that might be in it. I wanted a natural soap with no added colors or fake fragrances. I did some research and started creating my own soaps and lotions, with no unnecessary ingredients and using only essential oils for fragrance. Amazingly, the rash went away and I discovered that I loved making soaps and lotions; I wanted everyone to try them! A business idea was forming…the soaps would need unique packaging…what could I do about that? Well…my mother creates beautiful handmade quilts and always
has scrap material available for repurposing.Perfect! What could
I call this business? I wanted a name that is a little old-fashioned (like my soaps) but also one that means something to me. It didn’t take long to find my inspiration; my husband has a sweet wonderful Grandmother, Gertie, and coincidentally, my Great-Grandmother was named Gertrude. Perfect! Gertie’s Soaps and Sundries was born!
